OUR HISTORY
The vision for WUEE came into being after our founder, Mrs. Aniema A. Udofa, visited some rural areas in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria several years ago. She noticed that several women were in deplorable economic situations, oftentimes not being able to meet the daily cost of living, which rendered them unable to care for their families. Mrs. Udofa wanted to help these underprivileged women by leading them on a road to self-sufficiency.
On March 24, 2002, her vision came to fruition through a program called Planting the Seed of Harvest—to Achieve Self-Sufficiency for Women. The women of Qua Iboe Church in Ediene Attai were given grants to start or sustain their local market ventures. This program was so well received that this opportunity was extended to women from other local communities.
All in all, 131 women of the Ediene Attai community and 122 women of the Minya Ntak community were given grants. This program served as the starting point for the organization now known as Women United for Economic Empowerment, which became incorporated on December 6, 2002.
Since its inception, WUEE has awarded 354 women with micro-loans summing a total of ₦ 3,600,000. Furthermore, several orphans and young girls have been awarded scholarships to attend secondary schools, and other community development measures have been put in place to improve the quality of life for the village community as a whole.
As we commemorate 18 successful years of community impact, WUEE look forward to many more fruitful years to come!
